How to Easily Make This Stunning Double Gate Fold Card

The Double Gate Fold Shadow Box Card, whew! A big and complicated name for a delightfully easy and impressive card. I came across this card design while perusing the net. It is not my original design but I thought is was so clever that I wanted to share it with you. Because all of us crafters know that it is fun to make things that have other people say, ” WOW! You made that?”

Directions

Card Base

Cut a card base from the Secret Sea card stock to 27.9cm x 14cm (11″ x 5-1/2″). With the long side at the top of your scoreboard/paper trimmer, score at 4.45cm and 8.9cm (1-3/4″ and 3-1/2″). Flip the paper over and repeat on the other side. You should now have four score lines.

Fold the inner two score lines toward the center of the paper, fold the two outer score lines toward the outside to create the double gate fold. Firmly burnish folds.

Trim the remaining long strip down to 19.5cm (7-1/2″) in length. Cut this strip into two pieces each measuring 19.5cm x 3.2cm (7-1/2″ x 1-1/4″). Score each of these pieces at 10.2cm and 14.6cm (4″ and 5-3/4″). Fold the strips into a ‘Z’ shape but do not burnish.

Optionally cut a piece of Basic White card stock to 9.5cm x 13.5cm (3-3/4″ x 5-1/4″). This piece can be placed on the back of the card to create a place to write messages. For my example I stamped a greeting along the bottom of the card stock with the Secret Sea Stampin Pad and blended some additional Secret Sea ink along the edges.

Decorating and Assembling the Card Base

Cut a center panel out of a piece of the Peaceful Garden Designer Series Paper to 9.5cm x 13.5cm (3-3/4″ x 5-1/4″). Glue flat to the center of the card between the inside folds.

From the same or a coordinating piece of the Peaceful Garden Designer Series Paper cut two panels to 4cm x 13.5cm (1-1/2″ x 5-1/4″). Glue these to the two sections to on either side of the center panel.

For the shadow box strips cut four pieces of Peaceful Garden Glimmer Paper to 4cm x 2.8cm (1-1/2″ x 1″). Glue these to each of the smaller sections of the strips. Cut two more strips for the two long sections to 9.5cm x 2.8cm (3-3/4″ x 1″). Adhere the pieces as shown in the left photo set below.

Glue the strips to the card base as shown in the center photo below. The strips should be placed slightly away from the score line so that the card can close. Give this a few moments to dry before continuing on to the next step.

Next adhere the long side of the strips to the outside panels, right photo. Be sure the top/bottom edges line up with the right/left edges. Next adhere the last two strips of your DSP to the two outside wings.

Lastly you will need two strips of a coordinating pattern of Designer Series Paper for the out side wings. Cut these to 4cm x 10.5cm (1-1/2″ x 4-3/8″). The top of the right strip will butt up against the shadow box mechanism strips as will the bottom of the left strip. By doing this you should have an equal border of card stock showing all the way around the DSP strips. See photos below.

Final Touches

For the inside greeting I die cut the large label from the Peace on Earth die set using Peaceful Garden Glimmer Paper. The slightly smaller greeting label is cut from basic white card stock The greeting is stamped using a greeting from the Peace on Earth die set and the Secret Sea Stampin Pad. The smaller label is layered over the larger one and adhered to the inside center of the card.

The white doves were die cut from basic white card stock. The tiny olive branches were cut from Peaceful Garden Glimmer Paper and carefully adhered to the doves using a combination of cellophane tape and glue. The stars were cut from the same silvery Glimmer Paper as the olive branches. All dies used in this project are from the Peace on Earth die set. The doves are adhered to the card corners using dimensionals.
