How to Easily Make This Spooky Fun Fold Card

I do love a good fun fold card, especially when it looks complicated but is actually really easy to make! That’s exactly what I love about this spooky Halloween fun fold. It takes just a couple of clever cuts and some glue to create the unusual fold, and then you can have lots of fun decorating it with your favourite Halloween images.

So if you’re looking for a fun Halloween card that’s quick to make but has plenty of wow factor, grab your cardstock and let’s get started!

Directions

Card Base

Cut a half sheet card base measuring 21cm x 14.85cm (8-1/2″ x 5-1/2″), score at 10.5cm (4-1/4″) on the long side. Fold the card in half along the score line and burnish well.

Unfold card, orient the card with the 14.85cm (5-1/2″) side at the top of your paper trimmer or score board. Align the left card edge to the 3.65cm (1-1/2″) mark and cut from the bottom of the card up to the score line. Move the left card edge to 4.85cm (2″) mark and cut up from the bottom to the score line. The card front only is now cut into three pieces.

Cut a card liner from basic white to 14.35cm x 10cm (5-1/4″ x 4″), Set aside to decorate before adhering to the inside of the card.

Decorating the Card Front

Far Left Panel

Cut a piece of basic white to 3.5cm x 10cm (1-1/4″ x 4″). This piece will act as a mat for a piece of Pumpkin Pie card stock which his cut to 2.65cm x 9.5 (1″ x 3-3/4″). Emboss the Pumpkin Pie piece using the Swirls of Magic Embossing Folder and your Cut and Emboss Machine. Glue the Pumpkin Piece to the white mat leaving an equal border of white showing on all sides.

Small Center Panel

Open out the card, place the center panel into the embossing folder, butting the folder up to the edge of the card as tightly as you can. Next, carefully fold the remainder of the card base over the embossing folder and run through the Cut and Emboss machine. Note: This is necessary as the embossing folder is so large. I did experiment with the placement of the strip in the folder and discovered other ways to get the pieces into the machine but the embossing was not as ‘clean’.

If you do not wish to use an embossing folder you can also cut a small strip of Pumpkin Pie to .7cm x 10cm (1/4″ x 4″) to place down the center of the narrow flap to act as contrast.

Large Right Side Panel

The white matting piece for the right side of the card measures 9.5cm x 10cm (3-1/4″ x 4″). The top layer is cut from the Pumpkin Pie card stock and measures 9cm x 9.5cm (3″ x 3-3/4″). Adhere the Pumpkin Pie piece over the white mat leaving a small equal border all the around.

The large tree image and the small bat images are die cut from basic black card stock using dies from the Oh My Fright! die set. Use your thumb and a bone folder to gently bend the tips of the tree branches upward to create dimension. Glue the trunk of the tree and larger portions of the branches flat to the card front using multipurpose adhesive. Use this same shaping technique to create arches in the bat wings. Only glue the ‘body’ of the bats to the card front. See photo for placement.

The cloud shape is cut from a scrap of Smoky Slate card stock. Using a small blending brush, I brushed a small amount of Smoky Slate ink onto the edges of the cloud to give it some dimension. Affix to card with dimensionals.

Note: Before gluing everything down I laid out all of the pieces for the card front to be sure my greeting had enough space. If you are worried about spacing you can glue the white matted Pumpkin Pie piece to the right side of the card front before affixing the die cuts.

Greeting

Stamp the greeting onto a scrap of the Smoky Slate card stock using the black ink. Cut the greeting piece to 5.5cm x 3.5cm (2-1/8″ x 1-3/8″). Cut a matting piece for the greeting out of black card stock, measuring 6cm x 4cm (X” x X”)

Using a blending brush, spread a small amount of white into a scrap of Smoky Slate card stock. Allow to thoroughly dry. (Since the white ink is a pigment ink will take a little bit longer to dry.) Stamp the ghost from the Oh My Fright! photopolymer stamp set onto the white inked area of the Smoky Slate card stock. Die cut out the ghost shape.

Note: The addition of the white ink is optional. I wanted the ghost to be lighter than the other elements cut from the Smoky Slate card stock. The light blending of the ink also created a kind of smoky/misty texture that is sadly not visible in the photographs.

Glue the ghost shape to the greeting piece.

Adhere the left side of the greeting piece to the flap on the left and the right side of the piece to the large flap on the right. Be sure to not get glue on the central black piece. Optionally you can pop up the greeting on dimensionals as I did here.

Decorating the Card Inside

The central black embossed flap will be glued down to the card inside. If you do not plan to decorate the inside of the card just glue the white card liner to the center of the inside of the card.

Place adhesive along the black strip (only) and close. In order to help the strip stay straight close all pieces of the front. (See closed card in photo above.)

I chose to stamp on the card liner and prefer to do this before affixing it permanently to the card base. I held the card liner in place and closed the center black flap. With a pencil I lightly traced each side of the black strip so I knew where not to stamp. You should be able to see the lines in the photo. (Just click on the photo to enlarge.)

I stamped the images in the black ink and colored the cat in the hat with Stampin’ Blend marker in the following colors:

Cat: Dark and Light Smoky Slate
Hat: Light Black (shadows) and Light Smoky Slate (to blend shadows and fill in the white space)
Hat Band: Dark and Light Pumpkin Pie

When you have finished with the card liner, erase your pencil lines and adhere to the card base as instructed in the paragraph above. Finished!
